Applicable to models: RXPW4 RXPW4N RXPWIF
The pilot wire timers we manufactured used a mains based signal to tell Panel heaters, SRX SmartRad and the DuoHeat storage heater what mode to work in
This information is for electricians working on pilot wire systems to diagnose if a correct voltage is coming from the pilot wire timer to each heating appliance, depending on the signal given off from the timer.
In addition, we also have help guides on using the RXPW4 (PW4) and RXPW4N timers.
WARNING. Do not attempt measuring any voltages if you are not a suitably qualified person.
There are 4 possible signals given from the timer to each heater via the pilot wire. The dial on the pilot wire timer can be turned to either SUN, MOON, FROST or OFF symbols and a voltage reading can be taken at the heating appliance isolation switch where the black wire on the heater flex is connected, compared to neutral.
COMFORT (Sun Symbol). There will be 0v on the black pilot wire going to the heater.
SETBACK (Moon Symbol) 230v AC on the black pilot wire going to the heater.
FROST PROTECT (Snowflake symbol) 230v rectified - negative half wave only
OFF (Power symbol) - 230v rectified - positive half wave only.
Always bear in mind that some hand held multimeters may give an odd voltage measurement in Frost and Off modes as they may mis-read the rectified half wave voltage.
